Kenneth Cole: At The Pulse of Fashion

Not many fashion designers have their start as a filmmaker. Interestingly, it  worked the other way around with designer Tom Ford making his film directing debut in 2009 with the motion picture  “A Single Man,” which garnered an Academy Award nomination  in acting for its star Colin Firth.
In 1982, fashion designer Kenneth Cole became a filmmaker of sorts as a means of necessity. The designer wanted to show his new line of shoes during Market Week at the New York Hilton, in New York, NY, but was unable to afford the prohibitive prices for a hotel room or nearby showroom to showcase his items. Cole instead opted to park a 40 foot trailer adjacent to the hotel to show his shoes. However, he soon learned that trailer permits were only granted from the New York City’s Mayor’s office for utility or production companies.
Kenneth Cole Incorporated quickly changed its name to Kenneth Cole Productions, and the film “A Birth of A Shoe Company” was filmed as 40,000 pairs of the designer’s first shoe collection were sold over a 3-1/2 day period.
Thirty-two years later, Kenneth Cole is one of the leading fashion designers in the world. His men’s and women’s fashions, shoes, accessories and more are sold throughout the globe under the Kenneth Cole brand, Kenneth Cole New York and Kenneth Cole Reaction labels.
